I was born in Amsterdam in 1961. After I received my B.Sc. degree in Technical Physics in 1983, I worked on micromachined micropumps (1) as well as on micromachined microphones at the University of Twente. Next I travelled around the world during which I worked part-time on solar cells at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and returned to the University of Twente to assist with the development of a force sensor and a thermo-pneumatic micropump. In 1989 the Debio group invited me to work as project manager for disposable and implantable medical micropumps (2, 3). This work at Debiotech resulted in several patents. In April 1998 I joined the EPFL's Microsystems Integration group; I'm involved in microfluidic systems research and other projects (gas ionisers, scanning micro mirrors,...). We are now mostly working on biological labchips and nanofilter chips (living cells, proteins, DNA analysis, see our publication list on [http://lmis4.epfl.ch/ http://lmis4.epfl.ch/]).
